What We Look For In a French 1 Tutor Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of foundational French vocabulary, basic grammar including present tense conjugation, articles, adjective agreement, numbers, question formation, negation, and introductory listening and reading comprehension. Ability to explain regular and common irregular verb patterns, gender and number agreement, and pronunciation rules while preparing students for communicative competence at the novice-high level. Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching French pronunciation, basic sentence construction, and introductory conversational skills. Guides students through conjugating regular -er, -ir, and -re verbs, using definite and indefinite articles correctly, forming basic questions and negative statements, and comprehending simple spoken and written French. Emphasizes building confidence in speaking and connects French to Francophone cultural exploration. Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with French 1 curricula aligned with ACTFL novice proficiency standards and common challenges such as pronunciation of nasal vowels, gender memorization, and subject-verb agreement. Adapts instruction using TPR activities, visual vocabulary aids, and guided conversation practice to support beginning French learners at the middle school, high school, or adult levels. Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles. Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style. Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
