Amentum is looking for a Transportation Specialist to join our team!

Essential Responsibilities:

The Transportation Specialist is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the efficient movement of goods, materials, and personnel to ensure compliance with customer requirements, organizational policies, and regulatory standards. This role involves managing transportation logistics, scheduling deliveries, and performing inspections to maintain safety and operational efficiency. The Transportation Specialist communicates with internal and external stakeholders to resolve issues, facilitate timely deliveries, and ensure the accurate documentation of all transport activities. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Transport Coordination: Manage the transportation and shipment of goods, materials, and equipment, ensuring deliveries align with customer timelines and specifications.
  • Shipment Documentation: Create and maintain accurate records for shipments, including manifests, delivery receipts, bills of lading, and transportation reports.
  • Inspection & Safety Compliance: Inspect vehicles, equipment, and cargo to ensure they meet safety standards, damage-free handling, and operational functionality before and after shipments.
  • Fleet & Equipment Utilization: Oversee the use and maintenance of transportation vehicles, including light-duty trucks, vans, forklifts, and other Material Handling Equipment (MHE).
  • Customer Interaction & Coordination: Serve as the primary point of contact for customers regarding pickup and delivery requirements, schedules, and special instructions.
  • Regulatory & Legal Compliance: Maintain a thorough understanding of and adherence to transportation laws, including those related to hazardous materials, weight limits, driver licensing, and vehicle maintenance.
  • Database Management: Use applicable transportation/logistics management software or databases to track shipments, manage inventory in transit, and generate reports.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to:

  • Indoor and outdoor environments with varying temperatures, weather conditions, and occasional exposure to vehicle exhaust and noise.
  • Heavy lifting and loading/unloading of materials and equipment requiring compliance with safety protocols.

The position requires:

  • Physical stamina to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and lift frequently during transportation activities, with the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Dexterity and coordination for the operation of vehicles, forklifts, and Material Handling Equipment (MHE).
  • A strong sense of spatial awareness for cargo loading, route planning, and vehicle operation in tight or congested areas.
  • Mental focus to manage logistics schedules, ensure compliance with regulations, and resolve challenges efficiently.

Noise levels may vary from moderate (office setting) to loud (transportation/warehouse setting), requiring hearing protection in certain environments.

Minimum Requirements (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of transportation and logistics principles, including scheduling, routing, and cargo handling.
  • Working knowledge of operating and maintaining Material Handling Equipment (e.g., forklifts) and vehicles.
  • Familiarity with basic mathematical functions for tracking shipments, calculating weights, and estimating delivery times.
  • Proficiency in using databases, tracking software, and other transportation management tools to support operational needs.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in recordkeeping, scheduling, and communication.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with customers, vendors, and internal teams.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (CDL may be required depending on vehicle use).

Clearance Required (If Applicable):

  • TS/SCI with Poly

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Minimum Years of Experience:

  • Four (4) or more years of relevant experience in transportation logistics, shipping, receiving, or a related occupation.

Required Certifications (If Any):

  • Material Handling Equipment (MHE) certification is preferred.
  • Forklift Certification is highly desired.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

    • Associate's degree in Business, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
    • Experience using logistics management software such as SAP, JD Edwards, or Oracle Transportation Management.
    • Familiarity with applicable regulatory standards for transportation, including DOT regulations and hazardous materials handling.
    • Experience working in government or mission-critical environments with strict compliance requirements.
    • Advanced certifications such as Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) or Certified in Logistics, Transportation, and Distribution (CLTD).

    Service Contract Act (SCA) Compensation & Benefits:

    This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position that falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In accordance with the Health and Welfare provisions of the SCA, and in addition to your base hourly rate, you may be eligible to receive an additional health and welfare payment for each hour you work to ensure compliance with the minimums set forth by the act. The amount you are entitled to receive will vary depending upon the fringe benefits you select now and in the future.

    Compensation Details: $50,000 to $100,000

Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as job responsibilities, education, experience, skills, internal equity, market data, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and relevant laws.
