The Sommelier Role

You are highly skilled at the mechanics of wine service and the flow of service, and you care deeply about the guest dining experience as a whole. For the right hospitality-driven candidate, Compline provides an opportunity to learn, suggest, and sell wines from all over the world. The best candidates will have strong general knowledge of the wine world, while coming in hungry to learn more about individual producers, vintages, and wines. 

What you Do:

• Be part of a small, tight-knit team of hospitality-minded people
• Work in a positive environment
• Sell and serve wines—whether by the bottle, by the pairing, or by the glass—daily on the restaurant floor.
• Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of the wine list, including grape varieties, vintages, and winemaking details, as well as general information on appellations, geography, wineries, and wine history.
• Help ensure smooth nightly services by assisting hosts, support staff, bartenders, and servers when necessary for the team to succeed.
• Work with Compline's Wine Director and management to receive, account for, and properly store restaurant wines.
• Maintain a clean, organized restaurant cellar and take part in monthly inventories
• Help develop regular wine education for the service team. 
• Be up to date on Compline retail shipping policies and the Compline Monthly Wine Club
• Maintain a clean work environment and glassware
• Make meaningful contributions to weekly/monthly team sales goals
• Perform opening and closing duties as assigned by restaurant management
• Learn everything you can about the wines of the world by tasting, talking about wine, and taking part in team trips to local wineries

How you Qualify for the Position:

• 2 years of Restaurant experience required
• CMS certified or similar preferred
• California RBS certification required within 30 days of hire
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
• Must be available to work weekends and some holidays
• Strong communication skills, verbal and written
• High attention to detail
• Willingness to learn and ask for help when needed
• Passion for wine
• Salesmanship!
