JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/Objective
The Ship Checker is
responsible for conducting inbound and outbound ship, cargo, and container
checks. The Ship Checker is responsible for practicing safe work habits and for
maintaining a clean and safe work place environment.
Essential Functions
Reasonable

- Performs
checks on inbound and outbound containers abiding by Sun Terminals
standards - Completes
a safety risk assessment prior to all work performed - Compiles
records of amount, kind, and condition of cargo loaded or unloaded from
the ship documenting the discharge/load tallies; indicates if it's empty
or loaded to drivers moving from shipyard - Responsible
for diagnosing the status of cargo discharging from the ship, ensuring
that it is up to Sun Terminals standards, and documenting it accordingly - Records
condition of damaged cargo/containers unloaded from the ship - Verifies
amount of cargo against lists compiled from bills of landing or shipping
manifests - Communicates
professionally with team members, supervisors, and customers - Actively
participates in safety or educational training as required - Follows
all safety standards & guidelines, including but not limited to,
wearing of safety glasses, wearing of steel-toed/safety shoes, appropriate
safety gloves as needed, and proper attire - Performs
any other management requests or directives as requested

Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no
direct supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
This position works in
a port/terminal setting, with outdoor exposure during most of the workday. This
role routinely stands for prolonged periods of time and performs other physical
activities as needed while performing checks on inbound and outbound vessels
and the cargo in them.
Physical Demands
- Lifting
up to 50 lbs. without assistance and up to 250 lbs. with job aids or
co-worker assistance - Carrying up
to 25 lbs. for a distance up to 200 feet - Pushing/Pulling
up to 50 lbs. without assistance and up to 250 lbs. with job aids or
co-worker assistance - Standing/Walking
activities are encountered during 75% of the normal work day - Sitting
activities are normally not encountered outside of normal work breaks and
would not exceed 10% of a work day - Stooping/Bending/Squatting
activities are encountered on a frequent basis - Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling
activities are encountered approximately 5% of an average work day - Climbing
would comprise no more than 5% of an individual's time - Reaching
activities are conducted on a frequent and repetitive basis throughout the
work day - An individual
may be required to perform twisting activities, dependent on the type of
position he need to place himself in while performing his/her job duties

This is a fulltime position.
Days and hours of work vary depending on the company's needs.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance
Employee must be authorized to work in the United States, able to obtain
a port ID, and TWIC card.
