This is a temporary position. To be considered, applicants must currently be enrolled in good standing in a North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program. If selected for employment, you must obtain North Carolina Law Enforcement Certification within one year of employment. Under close supervision, attends NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (NC BLET) to obtain certification in order to perform Police Officer duties; performs related work as required.
Non-sworn Police Officer Trainee position; attends NC BLET to obtain knowledge and skills required to perform Police Officer duties. (The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
Some knowledge of the geography of the City and location of important buildings; ability to learn various, police procedures and law enforcement techniques; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear and comprehensive reports; ability to effectively perform work in stressful situations; ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; skill in the use of firearms and the operation of an automobile; ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with associates and the general public.
Education Requirements Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Special Requirements Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Must meet and maintain minimum training and experience qualifications for position as established by the City and the State of North Carolina. Upon successful completion of the NC BLET program, which includes certification examination mandated by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission, the trainee will be sworn in as a Police Officer with the City of New Bern.
